The workers village of Pripyat, named after the nearby river, was founded in 1970 to serve the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The day after the nuclear disaster on the 26th of April the whole village was evacuated, it has now been abandoned for 34 years. The Pripyat Amusement Park was planned to open on the first of May, only a few days after the explosion. The rides were never active and the park has now been completely taken over by nature and wildlife.
With this month’s ride creation contest I wanted to celebrate this little amusement park and finally grant it its May opening. All the rides you see in this entry (except for the river rapids) are modelled after the real attractions found in Pripyat. They are purposely worn-out and broken down. All other buildings and structures are based on existing buildings located in and around Pripyat. The station building for the river rapids is modelled after the ‘Palace of Culture’ also known as Energetik which the rapids are named after. Shkola nr.4 is based on one of five elementary schools in the village. The official village sign, now used as a memorial, can be seen nearby the entrance of the park as well as one of the two unfinished cooling towers and the train bridge that connects the power plant to Pripyat. If you want to see references to the real place you can scroll through some photo’s here. It is absolutely haunting but beautiful at the same time. https://www.shutterstock.com/nl/search/pripyat+old+culture
